Oil and resources are always big topics in the Southwestern Asia. Resources have a major impact on (not to mention the whole world's economy) Southwest Asian economy. It has given the Southwest Asia the power to involve in the affairs of the major superpowers both in the past and in the present. Prior to the discovery of other uses of oil (Mainly fuel), the region had been a hotbed for religious conflict, and wars over other rich resources and arable land.

One of the most clear examples of the religious conflict would be the conflict between the Palestinians and the Israeli. This conflict can be traced of its origins back to the late 19th century. The purpose of the conflict is wide ranging: boarder security, water rights, control over Jerusalem, land rights, and refugee-legalities. The violence is severe on both sides; the conflict is recognized by the world and has prompted security and human right concerns from both-sides and internationally. There has been numerous attempts to settle the conflict with the creation of an independent Palestinian state. Although a majority of Israeli and Palestinians would prefer this solution, it is hard to find an area of agreement. Some have even suggested the creation of a one-state where the land would become a bi-national state with all of Israel, Gaza Strip, and the West Bank shared. This conflict is severe not only because both sides are actively involved in the issue but because there are more than just the military involved. Regular armies, paramilitary groups, terror cells, and individuals all have contributed to the battle. Casualties are not limited to the military; there is a large number of casualty deaths from both sides. The most recent negotiations began in 2007. They talked of having a resolution by the end of 2008.

The Middle East is the most militarized region in the world and most arms sales head to the region. A suppressed people that sees US influence as a major root cause of the current problems in the Middle Eastern militancy, acts of terrorism and anti-west sentiment, anti-US in particular.
